Collaboration with Government Departments and Agencies
The Mangrove Foundation of India (MFI) works closely with various government departments and agencies at the national, state, and district levels to promote mangrove restoration, agroforestry development, and climate-resilient livelihoods. Recognized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) with the Wetland Champion National Award (2022), MFI collaborates with the State Forest Departments, Department of Environment and Climate Change, Fisheries Department, and National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) to restore degraded coastal ecosystems and protect wetlands. Through these collaborations, MFI aligns its efforts with national missions such as the Green India Mission and the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). The Foundation also partners with Dr. MGR Fisheries University, Sathyabama University, and other institutions for biodiversity monitoring, mangrove ecology research, and awareness programs.
At the grassroots level, MFI works with the Department of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj Institutions, and the Department of Agriculture and Agroforestry to implement community-based restoration and agroforestry programs. These efforts empower local communities, especially women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), by integrating livelihood generation with ecological restoration. Through these strong partnerships, MFI has successfully restored over 200 hectares of mangroves, conserved 1,000 hectares of wetlands, and promoted agroforestry on thousands of farmlands, contributing to India’s goals of climate resilience and sustainable rural development.
