Mangrove
Mangrove Foundation of India – Mangrove Projects
The Mangrove Foundation of India (MFI) works with coastal communities to restore, protect, and sustainably manage mangrove ecosystems, particularly in the Pulicat Lake and Buckingham Canal regions. Since 2007, MFI has supported the protection of 1,000+ hectares of mangrove habitat and planted 5 lakh+ mangrove saplings across 11 sites, covering nine native mangrove species.
MFI follows a Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) approach, combining tidal-water restoration, removal of invasive species, canal creation, mangrove plantation, nursery development, and long-term community monitoring. More than 350 restoration canals and thousands of metres of tidal channels have been developed to improve natural tidal flow and mangrove regeneration.
The projects also integrate livelihood development, fisheries, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and blue-carbon opportunities, creating sustainable benefits for coastal communities. MFI continues to develop large-scale community-led mangrove restoration projects across India in partnership with CSR organisations, donors, technical institutions, and local communities.
BAMBOO
A million Saplings Plantation Initiatives...
MFI’s Community-Led Bamboo Plantation Project focuses on large-scale bamboo cultivation as a nature-based solution for climate resilience, carbon sequestration, land restoration, and sustainable rural livelihoods.
A major project is being implemented in the erstwhile in Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with communities and farmers. The project targets approximately 1 million bamboo plants across 1,700 hectares, benefiting around 4,200 farmers. The programme includes plantation, farmer mobilisation, technical support, monitoring, and long-term maintenance.
The project aims to generate multiple income opportunities for farming communities, while contributing to carbon sequestration, soil conservation, biodiversity, and restoration of degraded land.
Agroforestry Carbon Credit Projects

The Mangrove Foundation of India (MFI) promotes community-led agroforestry to combine environmental restoration with sustainable farmer livelihoods. The projects integrate fruit trees, timber species and other suitable trees with agricultural land, helping farmers generate long-term income while improving soil health, biodiversity and climate resilience.
MFI has developed agroforestry projects covering approximately 2,600 hectares across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, with nearly 6,000 farmers expected to benefit. Earlier project implementation has covered around 3,000 hectares and 5,000 farmers.
MFI’s agroforestry programmes also focus on carbon-credit generation, with projects registered under recognised carbon standards. One major upcoming initiative is the Community-Led Agroforestry Plantation Project in South India (2026–2031), targeting approximately 5,000 hectares, including a large-scale mango-based agroforestry plantation programme in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh.
The overall vision is “Not Just Planting Trees, but Building Sustainable Livelihoods” by creating long-term farmer income, carbon benefits, ecological restoration and climate-resilient rural communities.

Lake Eco Restoration Initiatives..
MFI - Yamaha Lake Restoration Initiatives...
Mangrove Foundation of India (MFI), with the support of India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd., is implementing community-based lake restoration projects in the Sriperumbudur region of Tamil Nadu.
The initiative focuses on lake rejuvenation, improving water storage and groundwater recharge, restoring native vegetation, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience. Through ecological restoration and community participation, MFI aims to transform degraded lakes into healthy and sustainable freshwater ecosystems.
The Yamaha-supported projects include Ottentangal Lake (2024–2026) and Vadakal Lake (2025–2027), creating long-term environmental and community benefits.
Restoring a lake is not just restoring water—it is restoring biodiversity, livelihoods, and hope for future generations.

Awareness education on environment & climate change, mitigation and adaptation at school and community level

Mangrove Foundation of India (MFI) promotes environmental education to inspire children, youth and communities to protect nature and build a sustainable future. Through awareness programmes, field visits, plantation activities and practical learning, MFI creates understanding about mangroves, wetlands, lakes, biodiversity, climate change, water conservation, waste management and sustainable livelihoods. Students and communities are encouraged to connect with nature and take active responsibility for environmental protection. MFI believes that education is the foundation of long-term conservation. By empowering people with knowledge, skills and environmental responsibility, MFI aims to develop environmentally conscious communities and future generations who can protect ecosystems and strengthen climate resilience.
MFI Livelihood Support Programmes

Mangrove Foundation of India (MFI) supports coastal, rural and farming communities by connecting environmental restoration with sustainable livelihood opportunities. MFI works with local communities, farmers, women’s groups and self-help groups to develop income-generating activities that are linked to natural-resource conservation.
MFI’s livelihood initiatives include agroforestry, mangrove-based livelihoods, bamboo plantation, crab fattening, palm-leaf handicrafts, community-based enterprises and other sustainable income activities. Through training, technical guidance, community mobilisation and project support, MFI helps families develop alternative and supplementary sources of income.
Women and Self-Help Groups are encouraged to participate actively in livelihood activities, enterprise development and community conservation. MFI also supports farmers through plantation-based programmes that can provide long-term benefits from sustainable agriculture, agroforestry and carbon projects.
The programme aims to reduce livelihood vulnerability, strengthen household incomes, create local employment and encourage communities to become active partners in protecting natural resources.
MFI’s approach is simple: protect nature, strengthen communities and create sustainable livelihoods for future generations.

We're collaborating with esteemed institutions like Satyabhama Research & Technology University, Dr. MGR Fisheries University, SRM University, Women’s Christian College and C. Abdul Hakkim Art & Science college, SITE College, Chennai New College, Madras Christian College, Industan Arts and Science College, Crescent College for this project. The research into various wetlands and species is crucial for understanding and enhancing biodiversity. Identifying over 120 different species in a short time shows the rich ecological potential of the area. This knowledge will undoubtedly be invaluable for future conservation efforts and can also provide insights into sustainable practices. And we involved various experts - Dr. Aswathy Rajan, Dr. Govindan, Dr. Ganesh, Kalinga Foundation for different studies.
MFI Networking with Government and NGOs

Mangrove Foundation of India (MFI) works closely with government departments, local authorities, NGOs, academic institutions and community-based organisations to strengthen environmental conservation and sustainable development. MFI builds partnerships for mangrove restoration, lake rejuvenation, agroforestry, bamboo plantation, climate education, biodiversity conservation and community livelihoods. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, MFI connects grassroots communities with government programmes, technical experts and funding partners. MFI also participates in consultations, workshops, training programmes and environmental initiatives at local, state and national levels. These networks help MFI scale up community-led projects, improve technical capacity, mobilise resources and create long-term solutions for climate resilience, ecosystem restoration and sustainable livelihoods across India.
MFI Beach & Coastal Cleaning Programmes
Cleaner Coasts. Healthier Oceans. Stronger Communities.
Mangrove Foundation of India (MFI) conducts beach and coastal cleaning initiatives to protect marine ecosystems, reduce plastic pollution and promote responsible waste management in coastal communities.
Through community participation, volunteer engagement and environmental awareness programmes, MFI works to remove plastic, fishing-related waste and other solid waste from beaches, coastal habitats and surrounding areas. These activities help protect marine life, improve coastal ecosystems and create cleaner, safer public spaces.
MFI believes that coastal conservation is not only about cleaning beaches—it is about changing community behaviour and building long-term responsibility for our oceans and coastal resources. Students, youth, local communities, volunteers, institutions and corporate partners are encouraged to participate in cleaning drives and awareness activities.
The programme also promotes the importance of plastic reduction, waste segregation, responsible disposal and sustainable coastal practices.
Through regular coastal cleaning and environmental education, MFI aims to build cleaner coastlines, healthier marine ecosystems and environmentally responsible communities.
